Recently the Washington State Liquor Control Board, the Department of Health and the Department of Revenue came out with their first draft of recommendations to the legislators for medical cannabis laws.mmjplant The three departments were asked to come up with these recommendations after an amendment was slipped into the 2013 Budget Bill over the summer. It was introduced by Senator Ann Rivers. The group also includes John Lane from the Governor’s office and several other legislative assistants.

Washington To Begin Accepting Applications In November From Marijuana Retailers

Washington state regulators today finalized rules to govern the state’s nascent marijuana retailjar market. Beginning on November 18, regulators will begin formally accepting applications from those seeking state licenses to commercially produce, process, and sell cannabis to those age 21 and over. Washington State Officially Approves Regulations for Newly-Legal Recreational Cannabis Industry

Washington state has officially approved rules for its newly-legal recreational cannabis industry, according to the Associated Press.lcb

Today’s vote by the three-member state Liquor Control Board came after nearly a year of research, planning, public hearings and numerous draft regulations. The rules are now official, and the state will move forward with implementation. Recreational cannabis retail outlets are expected to open by the spring.

Bank of America OK With Being Washington’s Recreational Cannabis Banker

In an announcement that will have deep implications for the newly-legal recreational cannabis industry in Washington State, Bank of America has agreed to be the state’s primary cannabis banker, meaning they’re willing to accept millions of dollars from recreational cannabis sales.marijuanamoney

Currently Bank of America is Washington State’s official bank, which handles all of the state’s funds. However, the bank’s 7-year contract with the state runs out on June 30th. Washington asked for bids this month, specifically mentioning that accepting deposits of large amounts of cannabis-money will be a requirement.

The “War on Drugs Has Been a Failure”, Says Sheriff of Washington’s Largest County

John Urquhart, Sheriff of the largest county in Washington State, has publicly denounced the drug war, and will speak at an upcoming U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, which is taking place to discuss state and federal cannabis policies. The hearing is designed as a way for the nation to begin forging a better path forward in regards to their cannabis laws.

WA Proposal to Defelonize Simple Drug Possession to be Filed in Upcoming Legislative Session

A recently-announced proposal in Washington State to defelonize simple drug possession has garnered a primary legislative sponsor, State Representative Sherry Appleton, and will be formally filed in the upcoming legislative session, which begins in January.swlogo In addition to Representative Appleton, Representatives Joe Fitzgibbon, Jim Moeller (Speaker Pro Tempore) and Chris Reykdal have all signed on as cosponsors, with “more to be announced soon”, according to the nonprofit organization Sensible Washington, the group behind the effort.
