Denver Gives Out First Recreational Cannabis Business Licenses, Sales Begin January 1st

The first wave of Denver businesses approved by the city and state to sell recreational cannabis received their licenses yesterday, while applause brokecolorado out from onlookers cheering the historic occasion.

In all, the city awarded 10 licenses for retail shops, 12 licenses for cannabis cultivators, and 2 licenses for for those planning to make cannabis-infused products such as cookies, with more licenses to be distributed in the coming weeks.

Based on current legal standings, Denver is one of 19 municipalities and 7 counties in Colorado that will allow retail sales of recreational cannabis.

Colorado has approved 348 marijuana business licenses, with more than a hundred of those still pending in Denver.

“We’re hoping next week will be a fun-filled experience but a responsible one,” say Elan Nelson of Medicine Man, a licensed shop in Denver that plans to begin recreational sales on January 1st. “This is a new experience for all of us.”
