Obama Administration Gives Approval to Medical Cannabis Study

The Obama Administration gave approval today to a study which would examine the potential benefits of using cannabis in the treatment of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). medicannabis

“This is a great day,” says Suzanne A. Sisley, assistant professor of psychology at the University of Arizona’s medical school. “The merits of a rigorous scientific trial have finally trumped politics.

“We never relented,” Sisley says. “But most other scientists have chosen not to even apply. The process is so onerous. With the implementation of this study and the data generated, this could lead to other crucial research projects.”

“The political dynamics are shifting,” says Rick Doblin, Executive Director of the Multidisciplinary Assn. for Psychedelic Studies, which is currently raising studies to help fund studies such as this one.

In their approval of the study, government officials said the proposal meets official standards for research using illegal drugs.

Sisley must still obtain approval from the Drug Enforcement Administration, but that’s a task she feels will be a “less hurdle”.
