Bill to Legalize Cannabis Filed in Massachusetts Legislature
Legislation to legalize the possession, cultivation and distribution of cannabis for recreational purposes has been filed in Massachusetts’ House of Representatives. The measure is being pushed by the Marijuana Policy Project, which was instrumental in passing legalization initiatives in Colorado and Alaska.
House Bill 1561 would allow those 21 and older to possess and cultivate cannabis, and would create a regulated system of licensed cannabis retail stores, cultivation facilities, processing facilities and testing facilities. It’s sponsored by a bipartisan coalition of 15 lawmakers.
According to polling released in 2013, only 17% of those in Massachusetts believe cannabis prohibition is worth the cost.
House Bill 1561 has been assigned to the Joint Committee on the Judiciary.
