New Mexico Senate Committee Passes Constitutional Amendment to Legalize Cannabis
New Mexico’s Senate Rules Committee passed a proposed constitutional amendment today that would legalize the possession and use of cannabis for recreational purposes.
The committee passed SJR 2 by a 5 to 4 margin, sending the measure to the Senate Judiciary Committee. If it’s approved by the state’s legislature and not vetoed by the governor, it will be put to a vote of the people later this year.
SJR 2 would make the possession and personal use of cannabis legal for those 21 and older, and would direct the legislature to establish regulations for production, processing, transportation and sales. The legislature would also be tasked with determining taxes and potential possession limits.
If approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee, SJR 2 will sent to the full Senate for consideration.
