This Wednesday Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie will sign Senate Bill 2175 into law.
Senate Bill 2175 will authorize the University of Hawaii to establish a two-year industrial hemp research program aimed at studying the use of hemp for remediation and biofuel. The college would then be tasked with submitting “a final report to the legislature prior to the convening of the regular session of 2016.”
“There is a huge global market for hemp and the U.S. is the largest consumer at nearly $500 million per year”, says Representative Cynthia Thielen. “The passage of SB2175 is the first step for Hawaii to become a national and global player in the hemp market. We could profit hugely off this environmentally friendly crop.”
