Colorado Governor Signs Executive Order Reversing Cannabis Legalization
[Editor’s Note: For those seeing this article after April 1, 2015 – it was an April Fools joke, not a factual news story!]
In a
surprise move, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper has signed an executive order reversing Amendment 64, an initiative – approved by voters in 2012 – which legalized the possession, private cultivation and state-licensed distribution of recreational cannabis.
“Colorado’s experiment with legalizing marijuana has failed, and I feel it necessary to take it into my own hands to once again prohibit this dangerous drug”, Governor Hickenlooper said in Wednesday press release. “Not only did the law set a bad example for kids in our society, it set a bad example for the rest of the world”.
Hickenlooper’s executive order explicitly overturns every provision of Amendment 64, meaning the possession of up to an ounce of cannabis and the private cultivation of up to six cannabis plants is no longer legal for those 21 and older. In addition, cannabis retail outlets have been given 10 days to close their facilities.
Unfortunately, the executive order will put thousands of people out of work (according to a recent report by the state, the legal recreational cannabis industry has already brought forth 9,400 new jobs for the state), and will prevent the state from collecting the over $3 million per month (on average) in taxes they were earning on cannabis sales.

I knew this would be an “April fools joke” before I clicked on it… but I wanted to comment. With all that is going on and with so many states (mine included) still putting lives in jeopardy, this just didn’t seem like a good joke. But hey to each his own. I’m glad I suppose that in some places where the fight is has made great advances it is easier to make light of this subject. But for many its a real life-altering struggle. Happy April Fools Day none the less 🙂

lol the true native Coloradoans knew this was an april fools joke. We see some fell for it. By the way Amendment 64 was voted on by the people and in Colorado’s constitution. Once anything is in the Colorado constitution it can only be removed by the same way it was added by a vote of the people. True the feds don’t do what our federal nation constitution says that if the feds put prohibition on something the house, senate must pass an amendment and the President has to sign it into law ( example Alcohol amend. 18 making alcohol illegal prohibition. When 2/3’s of the states legalize then congress must pass an amend. to lift prohibition amend 21 look it up if u don’t believe) so Nixon who made it illegal illegally since no amendment was added to constitution. we also recall politicians who don’t do what the majority wants ex 2012 we recalled 3 politicians who voted for the minority backed gun laws and replaced them with 3 new politicians who do what the majority wants who put them in office. Sure wish other states residents would do the same on their federal congressmen and senators
