Cannabis Billboard Announced in British Columbia
The nonprofit group Sensible B.C., which is currently planning a referendum drive to put the decriminalization of cannabis to a vote of the people, has announced a new billboard designed to garner support for their efforts. The group will begin collecting signatures in September, and will have 90 days to collect roughly 400,000 signatures in order to put their measure to a vote.
The group – which has recently auto-dialed over 1.4 million homes – is currently in the process of increasing its volunteer and support base. To get their proposal on the ballot, they’ll be required to gather signatures from 10% of residents in each of B.C.’s 85 provinces.
The measure Sensible B.C. is working towards – the Sensible Policing Act – contains three major components: First, the measure would decriminalize the possession of cannabis for personal use. Second, it would alter the penalties for minors, making the possession of cannabis analogous to the possession of alcohol. Finally, it would establish a commission to study the impact of legalization, as well as call on the government to remove cannabis as a controlled substance.
“Things are getting worse in Canada,” said Sensible BC spokesman Dana Larsen. “More Canadians are going to be going to jail for small-time marijuana offenses and I think that’s a terrible waste of police resources.”
