Presidential Candidate Bernie Sanders Trumpets Marijuana Legalization, Expungement in New South Carolina TV Ad
In a new TV ad which is airing throughout South Carolina – the next state to vote in the Democratic primary – Senator and presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is touting his plan to fully legalize marijuana throughout the country, in addition to expunging past marijuana convictions. The appearence of the new ad was reported on by Marijuana Moment.
“Our criminal justice system lets the crooks on Wall Street who destroyed our economy walk free, while one in three black men go to prison”, states the ad’s narrator actor Danny Glover. “Bernie Sanders is fighting for justice and always has. He’ll fix our broken justice system so that it works for everyone, not just the wealthy.”
The ad continues: “He’ll end police misconduct and cash bail, legalize marijuana and expunge past convictions and invest in jobs and eduction instead of jails and incarceration.”
As noted by Marijuana Moment, South Carolina Democratic primary voters approved an advisory ballot measure supporting the legalization of medical cannabis in 2018, though a measure to do just that has failed to advance in the state’s legislature. Polling released last year found that a drastic majority (72%) of South Carolina voters support legalizing medical marijuana, including 84% of Democrats. It’s unclear where these voters stand on recreational marijuana legalization.
During his victory speech following the Nevada caucus, Sanders stated that “we are going to end the war on drugs and legalize marijuana in every state in this country.”
