United States House of Representatives Passes Amendment to Defund Medical Cannabis Raids

The United States House of Representatives has given approval to a bipartisan amendment to the Commerce-Justice-Science spending billmedicalcannabissymbol that would prohibit the federal government from spending money and resources on raiding medical cannabis businesses that are legal under their state’s law.

The amendment – which is sponsored by six Republicans and six Democrat – would prohibit the Department of Justice (which includes the Drug Enforcement Administration) from conducting any further raids on medical cannabis outlets, putting a stop to an activity that has occurred for well over a decade despite medical cannabis being legal in the states where the raids have been conducted. The amendment, for all intents and purposes, would legalize medical cannabis under federal law in states that have done the same.

The amendment marks the most progressive move ever taken by the U.S. House to protect state medical cannabis laws.

The spending bill was approved, and sent to the Senate.
