Tennessee Lawmakers Approve Hemp Legalization Proposal

Tennessee’s House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee has voted to pass House Bill 2445,hemphemphooooorah a measure to legalize industrial hemp.

The bill, sponsored by Republican Representatives Jeremy Faison, would allow farmers in the state to cultivate hemp, if they receive a license from the state. The proposal is contingent on a change in federal law, but the recent legalization of hemp research by the U.S. in states that have done the same will allow Tennessee farmers to cultivate hemp for research purposes immediately if the measure is approved into law.

The measure was sent to the House Finance Ways and Means Committee; its passage there will send it to the full House. A companion bill has been filed in the Senate by Senator Frank Nicely.
