Proponents of California’s Cannabis Legalization Initiative Have Raised Over $11 Million

California's Cannabis LegalizationProponents of California’s Proposition 64 to legalize cannabis for everyone 21 and older have raised $11.5 million in support for their proposal, according to state data.

The initiative’s biggest donor is former Facebook President Sean Parker at $2,303,965, followed by Drug Policy Action at $1.75 million, the New Approach PAC at $1,500,000, Weedmaps at $750,000 and Nicholas Pritzker at $250,000.

The $11.5 million raised is over 60 times the amount raised by the largest group opposed to Proposition 64, No on Prop 64; they’ve raised under $200,000.

DEA Approves Study of Cannabis in Treating PTSD

ptsdThe Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has given approval to a study examining the benefits of cannabis in treating post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

According to the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), who will be conducting the study, the DEA has given them approval to purchase whole-plant cannabis from the National Institute of Drug Abuse, the only federal agency that can distribute cannabis for research purposes. Now that MAPS has this approval, they’ll now begin the process of recruiting and enrolling study participants.

Weedmaps.com Donates $1 Million to California Legalization Campaign

Weedmaps.comweedmaps, a website that connects people with medical cannabis dispensaries and doctors, has contributed $1 million to a campaign looking to place a recreational cannabis legalization initiative on the 2016 general election ballot.

The money, donated by Weedmaps Media, LLC (formed in 2008), was given to Californians for Sensible Reform. It’s unclear exactly what the language of the proposed initiative will be, but it’s expected to be revealed in the coming days.
