United States House of Representatives Votes to Legalize Hemp Research

The United States House of Representatives has given approval to a national farms bill which includes a provision to legalize hemp research. The proposal is expected to be voted on by the Senate next hempresearchweek, where its passage will send it to the desk of President Obama.

“Originally introduced as an amendment by Representatives Jared Polis (D-CO), Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), the provision allows universities, and now also state departments of agriculture, to grow hemp for academic or agricultural research purposes, but applies only to states where industrial hemp farming is already legal under state law”, says Vote Hemp, a nonprofit organization working towards an end to hemp prohibition. “We expect the Senate to pass the Farm Bill and a vote is expected as early as next week.”
