Gallup Poll: 60% of U.S. Adults Support Legalizing Cannabis, Record High

smoking a jointAccording to a newly released Gallup Poll, 60% of those 18 and older in the U.S. believe that cannabis should be legal. This is the highest percentage of support Gallup has found for legalization since they started polling the question 47 years ago.

When Gallup first asked this question in 1969, 12% of Americans supported the legalization of cannabis. In the late 1970s, support rose to 28% but began to retreat in the 1980s during the era of the “Just Say No” to drugs campaign. Support stayed in the 25% range through 1995, but increased to 31% in 2000 and has continued climbing since then.

New Gallup Poll: 58% of Americans Support Legalizing Cannabis, Up 7% from Last Year

cannaamericaA newly released Gallup poll has found that 58% of adults in the U.S. believe that cannabis should be made legal, up from 51% the last time the question was asked by Gallup in October, 2014.

According to the poll of 10,015 people conducted between October 7-11 with a margin of error of plus or minus 4%, just 40% of adults in the U.S. oppose the legalization of recreational cannabis.

New Gallup Poll: 58% of Americans Support Cannabis Legalization

A new Gallup poll has found that a strong majority – 58% – of those in America support the recreational legalization of cannabis.potleaf This marks the first time that the annual poll has found majority support for the issue. When the polling firm began asking the question in 1969, support for legalizing cannabis was at 12%.

“Success at the ballot box in the past year in Colorado and Washington may have increased Americans’ tolerance for marijuana legalization”, state’s Gallup in today’s press release about the polling; “Support for legalization has jumped 10 percentage points since last November and the legal momentum shows no sign of abating.”
