Cannabis Possession, Cultivation Now Legal in Washington D.C.

The possessiondc and private cultivation of cannabis for recreational purposes is now legal for those 21 and older in Washington D.C., the capital of the United States.

In D.C., thanks to Initiative 71 becoming law at midnight (EST), February 26th, those 21 and older can legally possess up to two ounces of cannabis – twice as much as authorized in Colorado and Washington – and can cultivate up to six cannabis plants, three of which can be mature. Smoking in public remains illegal, but has been reduced to a simple ticket.

Washington D.C. Council Committee Approves Bill to Legalize Cannabis Sales

Wdcashington D.C.’s Committee on Business, Consumer and Regulatory Affairs has given approval to a proposal which would legalize cannabis retail outlets, allowing them to sell the plant to anyone 21 and older.

The Marijuana Legalization and Regulation Act of 2013 (Council Bill #20-466) will now need to be approved by the Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety and the Committee on Finance and Revenue before being up for a full council vote.
