Legislation to Legalize Private Marijuana Clubs Passed by Colorado Senate

A legislative proposal to legalize private clubs where marijuana can be consumed has been passed by Colorado’s full Senate.

private marijuana clubsThe Senate passed Senate Bill 184 today through its second reading; it will still need to be passed through one more reading before being sent to the House of Representatives. Passage in the House will put it to the desk of Governor John Hickenlooper.

The proposed law “authorizes the operation of a private marijuana club” if the “local jurisdiction has authorized clubs”. Marijuana clubs would be defined as ” a membership-based club not accessible to the general public that operates to allow members to consume retail or medical marijuana on the premises”.

Colorado Senate Committee Passes Measure to Allow Private Marijuana Clubs

Colorado’s Senate Business, Labor and Technology Committee has given approval to legislation allowing for the operation of private marijuana clubs.

Marijuana ClubsSenate Bill 184 was passed with a bipartisan 5 to 2 vote, sending it towards a vote by the full Senate. The measure “authorizes the operation of a private marijuana club” if the “local jurisdiction has authorized clubs”. Under the proposed law, marijuana clubs would be defined as ” a membership-based club not accessible to the general public that operates to allow members to consume retail or medical marijuana on the premises”.

Uruguay Cannabis Sales Begin in Just a Few Weeks, to be Sold in Pharmacies

Uruguay Cannabis SalesIn just a few weeks dozens of pharmacies across Uruguay will be legally distributing cannabis to those 18 and older as part of new policy passed by lawmakers in 2013.

According to National Drugs Board Chairman Juan Andres Roballo, there are roughly 50 pharmacies registered to distribute the plant throughout the country, and around 20 cannabis clubs where cannabis can be consumed onsite. Roballo tells us that the initial batch of cannabis has already been harvested and is ready to sale, with the public able to purchase from pharmacies by the end of September.

Denver Initiative to Legalize Cannabis Clubs Headed for November Ballot

Cannabis ClubsProponents of a Denver initiative to legalize cannabis clubs where on-site cannabis consumption could take place have submitted more than twice the required number of signatures required to put the measure to a vote this November.

The Neighborhood-Supported Cannabis Consumption Committee submitted roughly 11,000 signatures on Friday for their initiative, well more than the 4,726 required to put place it on this November’s general election ballot.

“We have seen an overwhelming show of support for this initiative among Denver residents,” says Kayvan S.T. Khalatbari, the initiative’s main sponsor..  ”They are excited about the possibility of providing adults with safe and regulated spaces in which they can consume cannabis in accordance with the Colorado Clean Indoor Air Act.”

Denver: Enough Signatures Collected on Initiative to Allow Cannabis Consumption in Bars, Other Venues

smokeAdvocates of Denver’s Limited Social Marijuana Consumption Initiative, which would allow cannabis to be consumed at locations such as bars and clubs, will submit over 10,000 signatures today, well more than the 4,726 needed to place the measure on this November’s ballot.

“While petitioning, we found that most voters agree adults should be able to consume marijuana socially in establishments that choose to allow it,” says Mason Tvert, one of the people leading the effort. “By allowing adults to consume marijuana in private businesses, we can reduce the likelihood that they’ll consume it publicly in parks or on the street.”

Uruguay Expected to Legalize Cannabis Tuesday

On Tuesday, Uruguay’s Senate will vote on historic legislation to make their nation the first in the world to legalize recreational cannabis. The Senate is expected to approve the proposal1111, which was initially introduced by the nation’s President, José Mujica, and has already been approved by the Uruguay House of Representatives, and the Senate Health Commission. Approval in the Senate on Tuesday will send the measure to Mijuica’s, who will quickly sign it into law. It will take effect after 120 days.
