Sign the Petition to Fire DEA Chief Chuck Rosenberg for Calling Medical Cannabis a Joke

DEA Chief Chuck Rosenberg says calling cannabis medicine is “a joke”.

Recently Chuck Rosenberg, head of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), told reporters he believes that calling cannabis medicine is “a joke”. This has immediately drawn backlash from supporters of medical cannabis, including a petition put forth by Marijuana Majority which has over 80,000 signatures at the time of this article’s publication.

“What really bothers me is the notion that marijuana is also medicinal — because it’s not,” Rosenberg said last week. “We can have an intellectually honest debate about whether we should legalize something that is bad and dangerous, but don’t call it medicine — that is a joke.”

He continues; “There are pieces of marijuana — extracts or constituents or component parts — that have great promise,” he continued. “But if you talk about smoking the leaf of marijuana, which is what people are talking about when they talk about medicinal marijuana, it has never been shown to be safe or effective as medicine.”

Rosenberg is, of course, completely ignoring decades of peer-reviewed research which has found that cannabis and its cannabinoid compounds can help treat a variety of ailments, from cancer to chronic pain.

“Chuck Rosenberg, acting head of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), just made highly offensive comments calling medical marijuana a “joke.””, begins the petition, which is addressed to President Obama. “While it’s nothing new for drug war bureaucrats to oppose sensible marijuana policies, Rosenberg’s comments go way too far.”

The petition continues; “Medical marijuana is not a “joke” to the millions of seriously ill patients in a growing number of states who use it legally in accordance with doctors’ recommendations… It is not a “joke” to the growing number of prominent medical organizations — American Nurses Association, American College of Physicians, American Academy of Family Physicians, for example — who know that cannabis has real and proven medical benefits…. And it’s not a “joke” to the clear majority of U.S voters who support passing laws to protect medical marijuana patients from harassment by police and the DEA.”

The petition ends by stating that; “President Obama should fire Chuck Rosenberg and appoint a new DEA administrator who will respect science, medicine, patients and voters.”

  1. Though with all the science and antedoctal proof proving Mr. Rosenberg to be wrong, even if he by slim chace were right; isn’t he, er, the pot calling the kettle black (no pun intended of course). Move that man out of the way of patient’s progress and continued suffering. All we need is one more big pharma puppet/clown to be blown over by the “Truth Tornado”. Sorry sir. Even the US. Govt DHS has a patent on pot as a nueroprotectant that their scientists proved before 1983. Go retire please.

  2. Chuck Rosenberg. This latest incompetent idiot is only trying to take goosestepping out of the closet. That’s all.
Secret courts,Loyalty purges? The D.E.A. and F.D.A. have become the U.S. equivalent of Gestapo S.S.. The D.E.A. was a bad idea to start with and has only gotten worse ever sense. States are able to do their job. They don’t need the D.E.A. I don’t need the D.E.A. You don’t need the D.E.A. .Nobody needs the D.E.A. They are misappropriating and commandeering billions of dollars of public funds that America can no longer justify..Their funding needs to be cut by,at least, ninety-nine percent and all need to be restructured to a much smaller and much more restrained gang of Authoritarian sociopaths.. This is a group of renegade law enforcement completely out-of-control .and way over-the-top.They are using the war on drugs as a smokescreen and a ruse to subvert our Civil and Human rights and increasingly more as a ruse to seize cash and property in their war on the American people. Also, through gross incompetence, have made it nearly impossible for a pain sufferer to get treatment without being thrown in jail.
mismanagement and unwise misuse of their responsibility has, nearly, completely destroyed the science and research of anything they don’t approve of. If society is to survive these people must go. The drug war is just a ruse for an Authoritarian power grab. Other country’s that allow easy access to pain medication do not have a major drug problem. It is these government villains here who are orchestrating this farce.

  3. Fire his ass cannabis has helped both me and my dad as well as my wife if it wasn’t for cannabis I wouldn’t be able to work

  4. As a biochemist who works in the pharmaceutical world, it is outrageous that the DEA can make a comment like this. There are volumes of peer reviewed journals that document the proof of concept for large clinical trials yet the government agencies block any of these from occurring. The majority of the people are more educated about drugs, efficacy, side effects, and toxic doses (overdose limits) then the people who legislate and prosecute people for using them. If the truth was told most commonly prescribed drugs and alcohol have far more damaging profiles then marijuana. We can not continue to have judges and probation officers holding their legislative rules in spite of clear evidence that for many diseases, if a patient gets relief from marijuana it is a far safer option then those that are FDA approved. Unfortunately we have built an entire industry that profits off the incarceration of others and until we have a serious discussion about how we redesign the justice system to reflect the lose of 50% of those arrested, charged and convicted, we will continue to fight for sanity around medical marijuana. About 30 percent of police, correction officers, DEA, trials so judges and prosecutors and so on will not be necessary. that is a huge savings for the tax payer but where will we shift all of this talent? It is a discussion that needs to be had.

  5. My mother has suffered from numorous problems from having past surgeries from car accidents along with anti immunity problems, surreatic and rumatoid arthritis, nerve damage, and muscle and bone damage. Sge had been legally perscribed percasetts, fentynl, vicodin, over the corse of 30 years to help eleveate her problems, but all those drugs did was make my mother lose so much weight she was 90lbs, she was having muscle spasms so they gave her muscle relaxers that made her have a seizure, all while not truley helping her. Rhode island passed the medical marijuana act n now 3 years later my mother is of all those opiode drugs n just uses her marijuana, n she gets more all around releife from mutiple aliments that to say its not a medicine is an insult when u can call phenn phenn a medication, and u can call types of radiation medicine but marijuana is a “joke”. No sir you are the joke.

  6. President Obama should fire Chuck Rosenberg and appoint a new DEA administrator who will respect science, medicine, patients and voters

  7. Medical marijuana is essential in combating illnesses, diseases and cancers. Research has shown time and time again that marijuana kills, combats and prevents a variety of illnesses, more so than any prescription chemical concoction drug pharmacists have created. Saying medical marijuana is a ‘joke’ discredits you in every way, shape or form. It makes you seem uneducated and ill-equipped to be in such a high position. You need to realize marijuana used to be legal, it used to help millions until it threatened the lumber industry. Do not place your own opinion in place of facts. Do your own research if you’re curious to how medicinal marijuana actually works. It does wonders, especially for extreme disabilities like epilepsy. Our citizens believe you actually know what you’re talking about, we expect you to be open minded about everything in order to help us best. Making your comment that you did, proved your stance was more personal than professional. Please, reconsider your stance or face losing your position. What you said greatly offended millions, even billions across the globe. Do not allow the belief that Americans are close minded fools to continue in the name of personal beliefs.
