A petition calling on President-elect Donald Trump to respect state cannabis laws has launched on Change.org.
“Donald Trump will soon become the 45th President of the United States”, starts the petition. “Trump’s victory comes as four additional states legalize cannabis for recreational purposes, and three more states legalize cannabis for medical purposes (with a fourth voting to restore patients’ rights revoked by state lawmakers). Although Trump has given no indication he will enforce federal cannabis laws in these states, he also hasn’t made it clear that he won’t, leaving many to wonder what his plan of action (or inaction) will truly be.”
The petition continues; “With this in mind, we are calling on President-elect Trump to respect state’s rights and refuse to enforce federal cannabis policies in states that have legalized the plant. This includes the eight states that have legalized cannabis for all uses, and the roughly 30 states that have legalized it for medical purposes.”
The petition makes note that “Two recent national polls – a Gallup poll and an American Values Survey poll, both well respected – show support for legalizing cannabis to be at or above 60% among all U.S. adults. It’s clear that voters are fed up with prohibition, and want a change. Enforcing federal cannabis laws would be blatantly ignoring their wishes, and given the harms of prohibition (criminal enrichment, wasted taxpayer dollars, overpopulated prisons, etc.) it would be directly detrimental to our society.”
Signing the petition – which can be found by clicking here – will automatically send an e-mail directly to President-elect Donald Trump asking him to support state cannabis laws.
