Painkiller Producer Donates $500,000 to Fight Cannabis Legalization in Arizona
Numerous studies have shown cannabis to reduce use of prescription painkillers. No wonder they oppose its legalization.
Surprise, surprise, the pharmaceutical industry is worried about the legalization of cannabis, a substance studies have shown reduces the use of painkillers. Insys Therapeutics, a painkiller manufacturer based in Chandler, Arizona, has donated $500,000 to Arizonans for Responsible Drug Policy, the main opposition group the Proposition 205 to legalize cannabis (up for a vote this November). As noted by the Washington Post, this is “one of the largest single contributions to any anti-legalization campaign ever”.
Proposition 205 would legalize the possession of up to an ounce of cannabis, and the personal cultivation of up to six cannabis plants, for those 21 and older. The measure would also legalize cannabis retail outlets. According to polling released this week, 50% of voters in the state say they support the initiative, with 40% opposed; 10% – enough to cause a 50/50 split – remain undecided.
Despite the donation from Insys, Arizonans for Responsible Drug Policy has still raised only about half of the amount raised by the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol, the group behind Prop 205. They’ve raised over $3 million, with a large portion of it from the Marijuana Policy Project.

I moved to Ok., at end of Aug. from Ca. After 25 years of NO marijuana use, I began using medical cannabis for chronic pain, other health issues. I have Lupus. I stopped needing daily Percocet!!! I rarely needed it.
It is illegal in Ok.!
I am FORCED to use Percocet daily.
It is constipating, it is a narcotic.
I’m so upset I can’t have medical cannabis! It helped my pain, my appetite, i’m underweight, I have insomnia to name some of the health issues it helps with.
I’m suffering due to the profitization of medical care. Big pharma, big health ins. They value PROFIT, not health. I’d like to swear a lot at them, but to what end.
Health care needs to be profit free.
