Mississippi Senate Approves Proposal to Legalize Medical Cannabis Extracts
In a surprise move, Mississippi’s Senate has given approval to a proposal to legalize medical cannabis extracts, such as cannabis tinctures and oils. The proposal, which has dozens of cosponsors
, now moves to the House of Representatives.
The bill is named after Harper Grace Durval, a 22-month-old girl who has a severe form of epilepsy called Dravet syndrome; her parents believe that cannabis extract – as it has with many other children with epilepsy – will help Harper live a happier, healthier life. However, Mississippi law finds cannabis to be illegal for all purposes, something that Senator Josh Harkins hopes to change.
Harkins proposal would legalize extracts of cannabis high in CBD but low in THC, meaning it would have strong medical benefits, but wouldn’t carry the same “high” as, say, smoking a joint.
“She has been on a lot of different medications”, says Harper’s mother, Ashley. According to Ashley, none of them have worked, and most have been accompanied with serious side effects.
If this new bill is approved through the House, it will go to the governor for consideration; he has yet to say whether or not he would sign it into law, let it become law without a signature, or veto it.
