Michigan House Approves Two Hemp Measures

Michigan’s full House of Representatives has approved two measures which allow for the cultivation of industrial hemp for research purposes.hempbiofuelremediation

The House overwhelmingly approved both House Bill 5439 and House Bill 5440, the Industrial Hemp Research Act. The measures would establish a hemp research program which would be directed by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. State colleges and the state’s Department of Agriculture would be authorized to cultivate and process the hemp (defined as having 0.3% or less THC) that would be used for study. The state’s treasurer would be tasked with funding the research; he’ll be authorized under House Bill 5439 to use federal research grants.

Both measures now head to the state’s Senate, where their passage will send them to the governor.
