Maryland Lawmakers Pass Bill Allowing Dentists, Midwives to Recommend Medical Cannabis

medicalmarylandMaryland’s full House of Representatives has voted 110 to 21 to pass a bill that would allow more than just physicians to recommend medical cannabis.

Under the proposed law – introduced by Delegate Dan K. Morhaim (D-Baltimore City) – midwives, nurses, dentists and foot doctors would be allowed to certify patients to legally use medical cannabis. Under current law, that authority is restricted to physicians.

Advocates of the measure argue that it will make life a lot easier on patients who have a qualifying medical cannabis condition, but have a hard time finding a physician willing to recommend the medicine, either due to its federal illegality or a personal opposition.

The proposal now moves to the Senate for consideration.
