Marijuana Becomes Legal in Maine on Monday, January 30th: Most Progressive Cannabis Law in U.S.

On January 30th the most progressive marijuana law in the U.S. will take effect in Maine.

At 12AM on January 30th the possession of up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis will become legal for those 21 and older in Maine thanks to portions of Question 1 taking effect. This limit is 2.5 times that of each of the other seven states that have legalized cannabis; they all have a one ounce limit (though Massachusetts and Oregon allow more when at home)

The new law also allows those 21 and older to cultivate up to six mature plants at a private residence. In addition, they are allowed 12 immature plants and an unlimited number of seeds and seedlings.

Question 1 also legalized a regulated system of cannabis retail outlets, though they aren’t expected to be open until sometime next year.
