Maine Marijuana Legalization Law Takes Effect, Now Legal to Possess and Grow

As of today, it is legal for those 21 and older in Maine to possess, use and grow marijuana.

Under the new law, it’s legal to possess up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis. This limit is considerably higher than the one ounce limit set by the other seven states with legal cannabis. The only other area in the U.S. with a similar possession limit is Washington D.C., where two ounces is allowed.

The new law also allows for the personal cultivation of up to six mature cannabis plants. In addition to having six plants, it’s allowed to have up to 12 immature plants and an unlimited number of seeds and seedlings.

Cannabis retail outlets, supplied by cannabis cultivation centers, are also legalized under Question 1, but they won’t be open until sometime next year.
