Large Majority of Likely Utah Voters Support Legalizing Medical Cannabis

seattletimesphotoOver 60% of likely voters in one of the most conservative states in the U.S. – Utah – are in support of legalizing medical cannabis, according to a new UtahPolicy poll.

According to the poll, 63% of likely Utah voters favor the legalization of cannabis for medical use, with 35% opposed; just 2% remain undecided, indicating that pretty much everyone in the state has made up their mind on the issue.

Surprisingly, 50% of those who say they are “very active” members of the LDS (Mormon) Church say they favor legalizing medical cannabis, with 47% opposed; this is despite most church leaders calling for church goers to oppose such a change.

Support for medical cannabis is astronomical among Democrats, with 90% in support. Among Republicans a plurality oppose it, but it’s close’ 48% to 49%. Among Independents support for cannabis being legalized as a medicine is at 72%, with 26% opposed.
