The Kansas Democratic Party has officially endorsed the legalization of medical cannabis, adding it as a party platform and vowing to work towardskansasdems it in the upcoming legislative session.

The announcement was made Saturday night in Wichita during Demofest, an annual convention.

“Kansas Democrats support the availability of marijuana for medical use and protection of patients from criminal arrest and prosecution”, states the new platform.

In February companion bills were introduced in the state’s House and Senate to legalize medical cannabis, though they unfortunately didn’t advance beyond their initial committees. Similar proposals are expected to be filed in the upcoming session, however, and the endorsement of the Kansas Democratic Party will surely add momentum to these efforts.
