Jamaica Moving Forward With Bill to Decriminalize Cannabis
Justice Minister Mark Golding says Jamaica’s Cabinet has approved a plan to decriminalize cannabis, and legislators are expected to approve it before the end of the year.
Approval by the nation’s Cabinet is the first major step towards the decriminalization bill becoming law, as it put it’s before the Legislature. If approved by the Legislature, as expected, it will go to Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, who has proposed decriminalizing cannabis in the past as a way of unclogging courts.
The proposal approved by the Cabinet would decriminalize the possession of up to two ounces of cannabis for adults 18 and older.
Justice Minister Golding says the government also plans to draft legislation that will allow those previously convicted of cannabis possession to have it expunged from their record.
