Initiative to Legalize Cannabis Filed in Arizona
A group called Arizonans for Responsible Legalization has filed an initiative with the state to legalize recreational cannabis, with a goal of putting the issue to a vote next year.
“Arizonans for Responsible Legalization is committed to common sense regulation of the marijuana industry and ensuring the greatest benefit to taxpayers,” says Gina Berman, an emergency room physician who will lead the effort.
The group has yet to unveil the specific details and language of the initiative, which Berman says will be released in the coming days.
The Marijuana Policy Project is currently working on a separate initiative to legalize cannabis, which advocates are also hoping to put on the 2016 general election ballot. The group hopes to finalize language for the initiative within a couple weeks.
In January, legislation to legalize recreational cannabis was filed in Arizona’s Legislature by State Representative Mark Cardenas.
According to polling released earlier this month, only 13% of Arizona residents support the state’s prohibition on cannabis.

This is a terrible idea, this is just going to set it up so that dispensaries and these pot shops can make nothing but profit off of people. Citizens need to be able to grow.

Home growers are not a threat whatsoever to dispensaries. You can grow carrots, right? And some people choose to grow carrots and some people would rather buy them. There are enough carrot eaters to go around. I have read everything I can find on this topic, and Dr. Berman has repeatedly stated that she and her company are in favor of grow rights for personal use. You want a dispensary on every corner like starbucks? You want to grow more plants than what would be considered reasonable for personal use? And you expect the stick-in-the-ass Arpaio supporting voters of AZ to support that? Get a clue, read the bill, have someone explain it to you. Let’s see, one modest and reasonable initiative written by a doctor who wants to treat marijuana like medicine, and one irrational one written by a known misogynist who has already turned Washington into a weed circus… http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/sexist/2010/01/27/the-breast-massage-will-happen-inside-the-culture-of-sexual-harassment-at-the-marijuana-policy-project/
