D.C. Police Chief: All Cannabis Arrests Do Is Make People Hate Us, Alcohol is Much Bigger Problem

chieflanier

Washington D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier.

Washington D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier is defending her district’s recent decision to legalize the possession and cultivation of recreational cannabis, saying that all cannabis arrests do is make people hate police, and that alcohol is a much bigger problem.

The comments were made by Chief Lanier at a recent meeting of the American News Women’s Club. Lanier says that D.C. police have “embraced” the district’s recent legalization of cannabis, and that last-minute attempts by Republican lawmakers in Congress to prevent the bill from being implemented is “No big deal”.

“Marijuana smokers are not going to attack and kill a cop,” Lanier said. “They just want to get a bag of chips and relax. Alcohol is a much bigger problem.”

According to Lanier, police hate cannabis possession arrests, Lanier said, noting that it doesn’t do any good and simply results in a large amount of paperwork and court appearances for the officer. She also noted that it ruins relationships between the public and police; “All those arrests do is make people hate us,” she said.

Cathy Lanier was appointed Washington D.C. Chief of Police by then-Mayor Adrian Fenty in January, 2007. In 2012 she received a 5-year contract renewal.

It’s always refreshing to see someone in law enforcement tell it like it is in lieu of lying and hiding behind hidden agendas. I’m gonna visit D.C. soon and contribute to their economy. And I won’t be drinking, so I’ll remember it too.

It needs to be legal everywhere it helps my foot pain and allows me to get a little exercise to control my diabetes without it I would be on meds.

What Chief Lanier has said is exactly true. It’s good to see a person in law enforcement with some good common sense and the courage to speak out about it.

Don’t be fooled. Lanier wasn’t in favor of this legislation, but she has no choice. So now she is back peddling and making comments like this to seem reasonable. She fought against this as hard as she could. Her current position is attributable to a “can’t beat them, join them” mentality.

Wow……..I hope more follow suit in this type of thinking. Alcohol is a far greater menace to society than pot smokers. (unless they are driving, then, impaired is impaired regardless of the vice of choice) Would love to see ads on liqour bottles of car accidents caused by alcohol and women who have been beaten by a partner, liver damage. I can go on…you get the point.

Brian, could you please elaborate where exactly in the Bible it states “I give you all seeds, herbs and plants to use”. I consider myself a Bible scholar, reading it for 33+ years. I have never found a passage stating God intended humanity to use Marijuana ? I am older with several ailments that I have been told by a medical professional marijuana would help with pain and discomfort control. I try to live by the Bible and have been reluctant to use marijuana. I can get a script for medical use. I am not putting you down for making the statement, I just need to know where you found it, chapter, verse. I live in pain every day. This could be beneficial to me. Thank You

Connie, I do not mean to be condescending, but exactly where in the Bible did you read God put Cannabis hear to cure our illnesses. I have read the Bible many times in the last 33 years and have never found this even though many say it says so. Being older and having developed several health conditions, I have been told that by using marijuana it could alleviate much of my pain and discomfort. This was stated by a actual Doctor. I try to live by the Bible so I am reluctant to use it. If I could find the terminology in the Bible stating God said it was provided to heal I could consider trying it. Thanks.

The verse I use is in creation,
After he mad earth he said it was good, in fact everything made by God was said as good in the story of creation.

Or somewhere it says he put herbs on earth for ……

People translate herb to Herb, if u know what I mean

[1:9] And God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so.
[1:10] God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.
[1:11] Then God said, “Let the earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed, and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it.” And it was so.
[1:12] The earth brought forth vegetation: plants yielding seed of every kind, and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. And God saw that it was good.
it doesnt say that it cures illnesses what it simply states is that god put all life on this planet and all life was good plants(such as the marijuana plant or “weed”) have a biological map same as humans and other animals alike it breaths it bends to the will of the sky and sun its been around since the beginning since genesis but at the same time the argument could be made that god put it here to cure us of our illness because we get alot of our common medicine from plants it can be infered from the bible that marijuana (plant yielding seed) could be used as a medicine and thats exactly what ancient civilzations used it for

        Genesis 1:29

And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb yielding seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for food:

I think he was referring to Genesis 1:29 Then God said: “Here I have given to you every seed-bearing plant that is on the entire earth and every tree with seed-bearing fruit. Let them serve as food for you.” – not really healing per sé

Just to make sure you know…
Cannabis doesn’t cure diabetes… It never could. It can however help with dealing with the ailments…
It’s not a full blown cure for disease.
I too like the medicinal use it’s had and helped me with for my ailments, but don’t go around spreading false information… It is why other people can never get their facts straight about a simple plant that does help with a lot.
(Maybe if you had cancer you’d be able to say that, in the hopes that it would, but heart problems and diabetes are something you gotta control and work with diet and forms of exercise.)
      Just sayin.

Finally a police chief who has the guts to see logic and only put those violent criminals away instead of

criminalizing those who get no more than a parking ticket !!!!

Well, regardless of her past persecution and oppression of cannabis users, this lady and her department just earned heaps of respect from this cannabis user. You see Chief Lanier, some of us lifelong cannabis users have a forgiving and accepting hearts and are completely open to ending this destructive war against the American Citizen! It’s nice to see what side folks chose to take, especially someone in authority. And a special thank you for the tip about the republican efforts to still persecute and oppress the American Citizen, it’s a good thing to remember these folks we vote in to represent us, We the People!

Jesus used cannabis as a healing substance in his “holy anointing oil”. Moses used it as well. Cannabis and its powerful healing properties was coveted and hidden by the religious leaders at the time and the outlaw Jesus used it for the masses against the leaders will. Kind of what is happening now. Whose side are you on?
