Maryland’s Senate has passed Senate Bill 364, a proposal to decriminalize small amounts of cannabis, with a 36 to 8 vote.
If approved into law, the measure would remove criminal penalties for the possession of up to 10 grams of cannabis, which would become a simple $100 ticket. The measure now heads to the state’s House of Representatives.
Polling released last month by the Washington Post found that a vast majority (70%) of Maryland residents, including 59% of those aged 65 and older, and 58% of Republicans, are in favor of decriminalizing cannabis
A separate proposal to legalize medical cannabis has garnered over 60 cosponsors.
