New Poll Finds Strong Support for Medical Cannabis Legalization Initiative Among Utah Voters

A strong majority of Utah voters, including a majority of those who are “very active” in the Mormon Church, support an initiative to legalize medical cannabis, according to new polling.

Utah voters are overwhelming in favor of legalizing the medical use of cannabis, a new UtahPolicy.com poll has found 74% stated that they are in favor of a proposed initiative that would allow qualified patients to possess, use and purchase (from licensed dispensaries) cannabis medicines such as edibles, tinctures and topicals (lotions, ointments, etc.). Just 22% oppose the proposal, with 4% undecided.

Although the LDS church has come out strongly against legalizing medical cannabis, 63% of voters who say they’re “very active” in the Mormon Church support the legalization of medical cannabis, with just 33% – less than one in three – opposed.

Utah Medical Marijuana Advocates Given Approval to Begin Signature Gathering on Initiative

Advocates of a Utah initiative to legalize medical marijuana have been given approval to begin signature gathering.

Utah Patients Coalition have received approval from Lt. Governor Spencer Cox to begin collecting signatures in an attempt to place their medical marijuana legalization initiative on the November, 2018 ballot. The group must now collect 113,143 by January in order to put the measure to a vote of the people.

“We plan to gather the first signatures by next week and be finished prior to the 2018 legislative session in January,” said DJ Schanz, campaign co-director for Utah Patients Coalition, in a press release. “Our volunteers—many of them patients or caregivers themselves—have been ready and eagerly waiting; it feels good to know we will have scheduled events in the coming weeks for those who have waited years for this.”

Poll: 78% of Utah Voters Support Initiative to Legalize Medical Marijuana

According to new polling, 78% of voters in Utah are in favor of a proposed initiative that would legalize medical marijuana for those with certain medical conditions.

The initiative, proposed by the Utah Patients Coalition, would legalize marijuana medicines – including oils, edibles and topicals – for those with serious medical conditions such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), chronic pain and autism.

According to a newly released poll, conducted by Dan Jones & Associates, 45% of voters “strongly support” the initiative, and 33% “somewhat support” the proposal. Just 10% oppose the initiative, with the final 10% remaining undecided. Among Republicans, 65% support legalizing medical cannabis, and among Democrats, support is almost unanimous, with 97% in favor. The poll, conducted between July 18th to July 20th, has a margin of error of +/- 3.95 percentage points.

Poll: 73% of Utah Voters Support Initiative to Legalize Medical Marijuana

A new poll of Utah voters has found overwhelming support for legalizing medical marijuana.

According to the poll, conducted by Fairbank, Maslin, Maullin, Metz & Associates (FM3), 73% of Utah voters support a recently announced ballot initiative that would legalize medical marijuana throughout the state, including 64% of Republicans and 63% of active LDS voters. Just 20% of voters overall opposed to the initiative, with 7% undecided. The poll found that support ‘cuts across all major demographic subgroups of the electorate.”

“The poll results show overwhelming and broad support for medical cannabis in Utah,” says DJ Schanz, director of Utah Patients Coalition (UPC). “Voters believe that patients should be able to safely and legally access the medicine they need.”
