Hawaii Resolution Urges NFL to Allow Injured Players To Use Cannabidiol In Lieu Of Opioids

**A resolution urging the National Football League (NFL) to allow players to use cannabidiol for medical purposes has been filed in Hawaii’s Senate.**

Senate Concurrent Resolution 34 was filed today in the Hawaii Senate by Senator William Espero (D) along with seven cosponsors. The resolution states; “BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2018, the House of Representatives concurring, that the National Football League is urged to allow injured National Football League players to use cannabidiol in pill or liquid form, in lieu of opioids, to address the pain from work-related injuries”.

The resolution also states; “BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Commissioner of the National Football League and the respective General Managers of each of the teams that compose the National Football League.”

Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Wants the NFL to “Drop its Prohibition on Marijuana Use”

**The owner of “America’s Team” has come out in favor of a change in the National Football League’s (NFL) marijuana policies.**

According to Pro Football Talk, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones held a private meeting with the NFL’s other 31 owners, which took place at last week’s Annual League Meeting in Phoenix. During the meeting Jones told the owners of the other NFL teams that he wants the league to “drop its prohibition on marijuana use.”

Jones’ statement comes roughly two months after DeMaurice Smith, Director of the NFL Players Association, said that the group will soon propose an amendment to the league’s rules that takes a “less punitive” approach to those caught using or possessing marijuana.

For Second Straight Year Super Bowl Winning Team is From a Legal Marijuana State

For the second year in a row in the National Football League (NFL), the winning Super Bowl team hails from a state that has legalized cannabis for all uses.

The New England Patriots have just won Super Bowl LI, their fifth Super Bowl victory in the past 16 years. The Patriots are from Massachusetts, which recently legalized the possession, use and personal cultivation of cannabis for everyone 21 and older.

The victors of last year’s Super Bowl, the Denver Broncos, are also from a state where cannabis is legal.

The Patriots victory not only marks the second year in a row that a team from a legal cannabis states has won the Super Bowl, it marks the third time in just four years, with the Seattle Seahawks having won in 2014.

NFL Players Association to Propose “Less Punitive” Approach to Marijuana

The NFL Players Association (NFLPA) will soon be proposing an amendment to the league’s rules that takes a “less punitive” approach to those caught using or possessing marijuana.

According to the NFLPA’s Executive Director DeMaurice Smith, the proposal will soon be presented to the board of player representatives. If the players approve the rule change, it will be sent to the NFL for final consideration.

“I do think that issues of addressing it more in a treatment and less punitive measure is appropriate,” Smith said in a meeting with Washington Post reporters and editors. “I think it’s important to look at whether there are addiction issues. And I think it’s important to not simply assume recreation is the reason it’s being used.”

For Fourth Straight Year, Super Bowl Features Team from a Legal Marijuana State

As the National Football League (NFL) continues its hard-line stance on marijuana – including punishing players for using it for medical purposes – it’s worth noting that this year’s Super Bowl will feature a team from a state where marijuana is legal for all purposes. This is the fourth straight year this has been the case.

This year’s Super Bowl – Super Bowl LI – features the Atlanta Falcons against the New England Patriots. The Patriots are from Massachusetts, a state where any of its players can legally possess, use, grow and soon purchase marijuana for medical or recreational purposes.

23 of 32 NFL Teams are Located in States with Legal Recreational and/or Medical Cannabis

**As the NFL maintains its full prohibition on cannabis use, it’s important to note that a minority of NFL teams live in a state where cannabis is legal all purposes.**

There are currently 23 teams in the National Football League that are located in legal cannabis states; just nine teams have home-states where cannabis is illegal for all purposes.

ESPN Poll: 71% of NFL Players Support Legalizing Medical Cannabis

With a “promise of anonymity”, ESPN recently conducted a survey of 226 NFL players and asked their opinion on cannabis and cannabis legalization.

“Spoiler alert:”, states ESPN, “When it comes to going green — from legalization of marijuana in the U.S. to the efficacy of pot for pain control — NFL players just say yes.”
