Washington’s Legislature has failed to pass a proposal altering the state’s medical cannabis law before the end of the session (March 13th).

wacannaMedical cannabis advocates have been ferociously fighting two proposals – House Bill 2149 and Senate Bill 5887 – which would significantly alter the state’s medical cannabis law by shutting down collective gardens, reducing the amount of cannabis patients’ can possess and cultivate, and by bringing forth a mandatory patient registry.

Washington State House of Representatives Approves Proposal to Gut Medical Cannabis Law

With a 67 to 29 vote, Washington State’s House of Representatives has given approval to House Bill 2149, a proposal to drastically alter the state’s medical cannabis law. The measure now moves to themedicanni Senate, where its passage will send it to the governor for consideration.

Under the proposed law, medical cannabis patients will be forced to join a mandatory patient registry in order to be provided with any legal protection, a move that advocates of medical cannabis have denounced, claiming it to be an invasion of privacy, as well as a safety risk, given it will establish a list – including individual addresses – of those participating in a federally illegal program.

Proposal to Protect Medical Cannabis Filed in Washington

A legislative proposal to protect medical cannabis patients and collectives in Washington has been filed in the state’s House of Representatives, according to the nonprofit organizationmedical-marijuana-symbol Sensible Washington.

Under the proposed law – House Bill 2233 – medical cannabis patients would finally receive defined arrest protection, as would medical cannabis collectives who receive a simple business license from the state. The measure was formulated by Sensible Washington in conjunction with Americans for Safe Access.
