President Obama Signs Legislation Legalizing Hemp For Research Purposes

President Obama has officially signed a nearly $1 trillion national farms bill which includes a provision that legalizes hemp cultivation for research purposes. The bill was signed this afternoon athemplaws Michigan State University, only two days after the Senate approved the measure.

Under the new law, universities and state departments of agriculture would be authorized to cultivate hemp for research purposes in states where its been legalized; prior to this law, a license from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) was required to research hemp, a license which was virtually impossible to receive.

United States Senate Votes to Legalize Hemp Research

The U.S. Senate has given approval to a national farms bill which includes a provision that legalizes hemp research. The bill has already been passed by the House of Representatives, and nowhemp heads to President Obama for final consideration.

”By including language easing restrictions on industrial hemp in states where it is legal, Congress sends an important message that we are ready to examine hemp in a more appropriate way”, says Congressman Earl Blumenauer, who helped author the amendment.

United States House of Representatives Votes to Legalize Hemp Research

The United States House of Representatives has given approval to a national farms bill which includes a provision to legalize hemp research. The proposal is expected to be voted on by the Senate next hempresearchweek, where its passage will send it to the desk of President Obama.

“Originally introduced as an amendment by Representatives Jared Polis (D-CO), Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), the provision allows universities, and now also state departments of agriculture, to grow hemp for academic or agricultural research purposes, but applies only to states where industrial hemp farming is already legal under state law”, says Vote Hemp, a nonprofit organization working towards an end to hemp prohibition. “We expect the Senate to pass the Farm Bill and a vote is expected as early as next week.”
