New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu signed Ordinance #31,148 into law Wednesday, altering the city’s cannabis possession law.
Under the new law, which takes effect June 21st, police officers will be given the option of simply ticketing an individual caught possessing up to 14 grams of cannabis, rather than arresting them as the law currently mandates. Tickets will range in cost from $40, to a maximum of $100.
Under current New Orleans law, the possession of up to 14 grams of cannabis is punishable by up to 15 days in jail.
With a population of over 380,000, New Orleans is the most populated city in Louisiana, and the 50th most populated city in the United States.
