Hemp Legalized in California

Governor Jerry Brown has officially signed the California Industrial Hemp Farming Act (SB 566), legalizing hemp in the State of California.marijuana hemp

“We are very pleased to have the signature,” says Senator Mark Leno, the prime sponsor of the proposal. “It’s been a 10-year effort to get here. [The passing of Senate Bill 566] will help sustain family farms in California for the future and likely create more job opportunities. Hemp is a $500 million a year industry in California, and it’s growing at 10 percent annually.”

Senator Leno continues; “This is a miracle plant that has served the planet earth well for, literally, millennia, and that we currently legally manufacture and sell thousands of hemp products including food, clothing, shelter, paper, fuel, all biodegradable products. It’s renewable every 90 days, grows without herbicides, pesticides and fungicides, and needs less water than corn. It is the definition of sustainability.”

The new law legalizes hemp – defined as having 0.3% or less THC – allowing farmers to become licensed with the state to cultivate hemp for private, or industrial purposes. With the proposal’s passage, the issue of federal law is still in question, but with the recent announcement from the Obama Administration that they won’t enforce federal law in states that legalize cannabis, Senator Leno isn’t worried.

“I have great confidence in a recent statement by Attorney General Eric Holder,” says Leno. “He’s said that if a state puts into place a legal allowance and regulatory scheme, that the federal government would not interfere with marijuana. Now, we need clarification between hemp and marijuana, but there’s no sensical way that that could be interpreted that hemp is excluded, given that hemp’s not a drug.”

    For recreational use is 0.3% or less THC any good? I live in the Netherlands and our THC levels are around the 15% now. Greetings

    Hemp is not for smoking or ingesting. There is no recreational use to it. It’s for industrial uses. Making rope, oils, paper, and ext.

    HEMP is not Marijuana (Cannabis)..
    They are completely different plants and people really need to learn the difference..

    The propoganda your government has spun for years is why you think its the same…
    But its not, it was only made illegal for profit of other greedy businesses so they had less competition..

    This is a great step forward..

      You’re obviously an idiot and don’t know anything about cannabis or economics. If marijuana is legalized there will be no need for drug dealers anymore. There will be legal dispensaries that charge 1/3 of the price that most pot dealers try to charge. There’s never been a single death from pot and it does NOT cause cancer. Two key chemicals in cannabis are THC and CBD, both having benefits that make you less prone to cancer. Hemp oil its self is more effect than chemotherapy, which kills not only cancer cells but also kills healthy cells. So marijuana- a far better medicine than big pharma can bring you. (;

    @ nate: just fyi, hemp seeds can be ingested you dumba$$… and if they legalized it all around, it wouldn’t be an exclusive profit for the gov’t. that’s why they haven’t on a fed level.

    I’m actually surprised how many people do not know the difference. Hemp was one of the crops that helped get the USofA going (along with tobacco and cotton), and is one of the most useful fibers in the world.
