Founder of Silk Road Sentenced to Life in Prison Without Parole

Ross Ulbricht, 31, who founded the secretive website Silk Road, has been sentenced to life in prison without parole, a sentence his attorney calls “unreasonable, unjust, unfair.”

Silk Road, which was shutdown by federal officials in 2013, amassed over $187 million while Ulbricht was in charge, primarily through illegal drug sales. Government estimates put the total number of illegal drug transactions that have occurred on Silk Road at $1.2 billion.

Ulbricht was sentenced to two terms of life in prison without parole, in addition to three lesser sentences.

“Silk Road was about creating demand and fulfilling demand,” the judge said. “You don’t fit the criminal profile, but you are a criminal.”

“I don’t know that you feel a lot of remorse,” she added. “I don’t think you know that you hurt a lot of people.”

Ulbricht’s defense team plans to file an appeal, calling the sentence “unreasonable, unjust, unfair.”

“I’ve had my youth, and I know you must take away my middle years, but please leave me my old age”, Ulbricht wrote to Judge Katherine Forrest before the sentencing. “Please leave me a small light at the end of the tunnel, an excuse to stay healthy, an excuse to dream of better days ahead, and a chance to redeem myself in the free world before I meet my maker.”

Wow that is out of hand …. I can see 5-10 years maybe even 20 but really life without possibility of parole that is not even close to being fair.
