Cannabis Legalization Goes Into Effect Next Week in Washington D.C.

On February 26th, barring federal interference, Initiative 71 will take effect in Washington D.C., legalizing the possession and private cultivation of cannabis for those 21 and older.dc

Initiative 71, which was approved with over 70% of the vote, will legalize the possession of up to two ounces of cannabis, in addition to the private cultivation of up to six plants.

Although Initiative 71 didn’t legalize cannabis sales, legislation was filed last month in the D.C. Council to do just that. However, Congress has since passed a national spending bill which prohibits the district from spending federal or local funding implementing the legalization of cannabis. In response to this, President Obama included a change in his proposed 2016 budget which would allow D.C. to spend its own funding legalizing cannabis sales.

Earlier this month U.S. drug czar Michael Botticelli stated that he supports D.C.’s freedom to implement their own laws, even if that means legalizing the distribution of cannabis.

This will be a huge opportunity for the people who are on the forefront of this growing industry to actually take control of the reigns as far as the governing of recreational marijuana goes and making it a grass roots movement in our nations capitol setting a new precident for how the recreational industry should be run and what better place to start than in our capitol with bare bones regulations as far as grey areas go for cultivation and the use of collectives and co-op style grow clubs which some might see as a recipe for choas but I see it as an opportunity for the people to take back this plant for both medical and recreational purposes and out of the hands of another government agency like the ATF or the liquor control board a place for dangerous chemicals like alcohol and tobacco products not a place for a plant with medical benefits as well as recreational benefits as well something that I find to be unique about the marijuana plant that even as recreational use it has.medicinal value with out the addictive properties of say the opium poppy or the coca plants both have there place as medicine but carry a high risk for abuse as they are highly addictive drugs with dangerous potential as well
