Cannabis Billboards to Surround Super Bowl XLVIII

The freeways surrounding MetLife Stadium in New Jersey – home of Super Bowl XLVIII – will be surrounded by cannabis billboards before the game, in a move put forth by the Marijuana Policy Project.mppbillboard

“Hopefully it’s going to inspire people to talk to one another about marijuana and particularly its relative harms compared to alcohol and football,” says Mason Tvert, Communications Director for the Marijuana Policy Project. “I think a lot of people will be shocked at just how many people are getting in trouble for using a less harmful substance than alcohol… When you’re sitting in a full stadium and you think about the idea of everyone in there being arrested 10 times over, it really gets you thinking about just how many people that is.”

Tvert is referring to one of the group’s billboards which shows that the amount of cannabis arrests in 2012 alone is roughly the same as the combined attendance of the last 10 Super Bowls.

Other ads being placed around the stadium refer to cannabis as a substance safer than alcohol and football, and two of the ads show players asking the question; “Why does the league punish us for making the safer choice?”

The images for the billboards can be seen below.
