Best Stoner Movies And Marijuana Documentaries

 By Robert Bergman, ILoveGrowingMarijuana.com

Stoner Movies It is common knowledge that, after smoking marijuana, one of the best things to do is enjoy a good movie. Of course, not all movies will do the trick — it should be one of the right kind of stoner movies. If you choose one of the best stoner movies, you will undoubtedly enjoy yourself and remember it fondly afterward.

So which movies make for the best weed movies? Are trippy movies the only ones worth watching, or are funny stoner movies also worth it? Are there good stoner movies on Netflix? Let’s look at some of the best pot movies of all time.

Newer stoner movies

Pineapple Express (2008)
As one of the more recent big name marijuana movies, Pineapple Express has now become a staple in terms of funny movies to watch while high. It follows the story of Dale (Seth Rogan), who stumbles upon a murder taking place. When he ran away, he dropped his joint — giving the murderers a clue to find him. Because this joint was the rare Pineapple Express, finding Dale wasn’t too difficult. Dale and his dealer, Saul get into all sorts of shenanigans as they attempt to avoid getting hunted down.

Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle (2004)
Although this isn’t the newest of good pot movies, it is a more recent classic that is definitely worth checking out. It all has to do with that feeling you get when you smoke marijuana and desperately crave a very specific thing — two stoners, Harold and Kumar, go through this very feeling, and crave White Castle more than anything else. They go through all sorts of obstacles and run into plenty of trouble on their hilarious quest to acquire that delicious White Castle cuisine.

Smiley Face (2007)

This is a hilarious movie starring Anna Faris. Jane, played by Faris, accidentally has all of her roommate’s pot brownies and attempts to live her life as an actress despite being way too stoned. She goes through an audition, interacts with her awful boyfriend, attempts to do regular adult things such as paying the bills, but struggles with it all in a hilarious way. Smiley Face is an extremely hilarious movie for anyone who has struggled through a day of being too high.

Old school movies

The Big Lebowski (1998)
This is perhaps the best stoner movie of all, starring “The Dude” (Jeff Lebowski, played by Jeff Bridges). The Dude is a stereotypical hippie stoner who lives an easy, fun life until he is mixed up with another man who shares the same name — and this man happens to be a millionaire. Gangsters, thugs, and deaths begin plaguing The Dude’s once easy going life, making for some hilarious and interesting adventures.

Cheech & Chong: Up in Smoke (1978)
It wouldn’t be a proper list of stoner movies without including a Cheech and Chong classic. It is known for its humor, starring the all-famous Cheech and Chong (two stoner buddies) who drive a van that is actually made of marijuana into the US from Mexico. Hilarious adventures ensue, as do excellent stoner joke after joke. This movie (and many of the other Cheech and Chong movies) are known for being the basis for many marijuana movies.

Half Baked (1998)
If you’re looking for classic stoner movies, you shouldn’t miss Half Baked. The plot is creative and shockingly ridiculous, which we can only assume is from the influence of marijuana anyway. The plot is as follows: some friends need to bail their friend out of jail (he’s there because he fed a diabetic police horse some junk food, thus leading to its death), so they steal marijuana from a lab and try to sell it to pay for the bail. Dave Chappelle stars in it, which tells you enough about how funny it is.

Weed documentaries

Documentaries about marijuana are, of course, in a different class from stoner movies. They inform, educate, and spread the news about marijuana and what it can do. Let’s look at a few of the best documentaries about weed.

A NORML Life (2011)
NORML stands for the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. This documentary is all about medical marijuana and how it should be legalized in the United States. The organization is attempting to get marijuana legalized for adults to use responsibly, and the documentary includes interviews with patients who have used marijuana to help them, activists, and even doctors. It helps viewers understand the background and use of medical marijuana.

The Union: The Business Behind Getting High (2007)
This documentary looks at all aspects of the marijuana industry, likely providing the most complete source of information on the subject to date. It’s mostly about marijuana in Canada, explaining the entire market (which is illegal) and how it functions as a successful and huge illegal entity. Interviews include politicians, police officers, doctors, growers, criminologists, and plenty of other people who have an interesting perspective to contribute. If you want to learn about the weed industry, this documentary is for you.

Super High Me (2007)
Although not regarded as the most scientific of documentaries, Super High Me is a parody of Super Size Me, done by comedian Doug Benson. Benson is an outspoken marijuana user who does his own “experiment” that involves not smoking any marijuana for a full month and then smoking marijuana every day for a full month after that. His tests show the results of his “study,” and his resulting documentary is well known for being interesting and also one of the funniest marijuana documentaries.
