69% in Canada Support Removing Criminal Penalties for Cannabis Possession
A new Forum Research Inc. poll has found that over 2/3rds of Canadian residents support the decriminalization or legalization of cannabis for adults; the results mark a 4% increase from when the last time the question was asked back in November.
The poll found that only 15% of Canadians want the penalties for cannabis to remain the same, and even less – 13% – want the penalties to increase. 3% remain undecided on what their opinion is on the matter.
Interesting, the poll found that support for removing criminal penalties for cannabis was highest among the wealthy (those making over 60k a year), and lowest among the least wealthy (those making under 20k a year); the least wealthy were also the most likely to support an increase in criminal penalties for cannabis.
Under current law in Canada the possession of less than 30 grams can result in a maximum sentence of up to six months in jail, and a fine up to $1,000.
