Germany will legalize will legalize medical cannabis by the end of next year, Federal Health Minister Hermann Gröhe has announced.

The German cabinet agreed Monday to pass a measure to allow the medical use of cannabis for seriously ill patients who have consulted with a doctor and “have no therapeutic alternative,” according to a press release from the Health Ministry.

“Our goal is that seriously ill people are looked after to the best of our ability,” Gröhe said.

Gröhe also said he wants health insurance companies to cover the cost of people’s medical use, given they can’t afford it themselves.

No specific timeline was given on when the new law is expected to be officially passed into law, and when it will take full effect once it does.
