Police Forced to Return Over 60 Pounds of Marijuana to California Dispensaries

Police in Vallejo, California have returned over $200,000 worth of marijuana, including 60 pounds of dried bud, and boxes full of marijuana-infused food products, to two dispensaries in the city after a judge ruled that they were illegally raided. The police also returned hundreds of now-dead plants: Scott Candrell, an attorney for one of the dispensaries, stated that they would seek damages in court for anything that was lost or destroyed in the raid.

The situation started last year, when in February, Vallejo police raided around six dispensaries, charging them with marijuana distribution. Given that all six of these organizations were legally following state law, the cases were dropped.

Since these raids, which cost the city hundreds of thousands of dollars, Vallejo Police Department has cut their staff from roughly 150, down to 90, which has resulted in an increase in crime.

Since the raids, the number of dispensaries in the city has increased, prompting the city council, without logic, to place a moratorium this month on any new medical marijuana business.

Did we mention that this was the same city that was so unstable with their finances, that they were forced to file bankruptcy?

We do not realize the kind of influence and power local police have over our city councils. The irony is the public will not know and/or forget how the police caused crime to go up in their city. The numbers will show that dispensaries are up and so is crime, wich is what they’ll hear and repeat. The other facts will fall the side and once again the war on drugs fails our families and communities with staggering support from the very people we pay to run our cities, and serve and protect us.

Police need to stop all the activity where they target people based on laws and prosecutors, instead they need to do community policing where they are not interested in the legality of matter but the safety and freedom of all citizens they are sworn to protect. Abide by the people, not by vested interests and lawyers with guns.

A few factual corrections: Police and fire pensions bankrupted Vallejo about 5 years ago, and is wholly unrelated to this story. Latest figure is actually 85 cops, but citizens chased the influx of hookers out, and despite the reduction in force, when we called in a domestic on our neighbors last night, the cops were there in under 5 minutes. It’s not all doom here.

Vallejo isn’t all bad, but yes, these raids were spectacularly stupid of the cops, not to mention executed in a VERY violent and arrogant manner. They deliberately damaged cameras and other property at these places. They deserve the embarassment on this one. Glad to know how it turned out.
