New Study: Cannabis Use During Pregnancy is Safe, No Harm to Baby

PregnancyA new study published today by the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology has found that the consumption of cannabis by a pregnant mom is entirely safe for the growing fetus.

According to the study, consuming cannabis while pregnant does not adversely affect birth outcomes such as the likelihood of a preterm birth or the baby being born with low body weight. There was also absolutely no increased risk of a miscarriage, or having a baby smaller than normal for its gestational age.

The study analyzed data from 31 studies that included over 130,000 pregnant participants (roughly 8,000 of which had consumed cannabis during their pregnancy).

“Maternal marijuana use during pregnancy is not an independent risk factor for adverse neonatal outcomes after adjusting for confounding factors” the study states. “Thus, the association between maternal marijuana use and adverse outcomes appears attributable to concomitant tobacco use and other confounding factors.

This is the largest study of its kind since a study published years ago in the journal Pediatrics; that study found that infants born with cannabis in their system are drastically less likely to die in their first two years of life.
