How to Make Cannabis Eliquid

How to Make Cannabis Eliquid

Have you seen anyone vaping and wondered what they’re vaping on?

Ever seen someone vaping a yellowing orange tint or even green liquid in their vaporizer and wondered what that was?

Well, that’s cannabis extract oil, which brings a whole new level of discreet and easiness to smoking marijuana.cannabis eliquid

No need for a marijuana vaporizer when you can just attach a clearomizer or atomizer to a battery and vape away with no lingering odor of cannabis that some may not like.

It might not work the first time but if it does not, keep trying, it’s fairly easy to do.

Delta Extrax

Ingredients You Need

  • Ground up cannabis until its fine. Use a coffee grinder and a dedicated heat press for extraction if needed.
  • Food Grade Propylene Glycol (PG) OR vegetable glycerin can also be used. This can be bought on Amazon for fairly cheap.
  • Filtering cloth. Thin coffee filters will also work well.
  • 5mL dropper bottles for easy squeezing.
  • Any e-cig with a clearomizer.
  • OPTIONAL: To change the flavor, add a few drops of e-Cig juice to your mixture to liven it up.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1) Mix it All In

Add some Propylene Glycol (PG), about 400mL to 500mL into a bowl or pot and let it warm up a bit.

Mix some of the fine ground up cannabis, about half an ounce into the warm pot of Propylene Glycol (PG).

2) Slow Cook for 5-6H
Slow Cook for 5-6HLeave it like this on top of the stove, with the heat at low and let it sit gently for about 5-6 hours.

Remember, much like cooking, you must put your heart and passion into it to make it taste excellent so stirring it often will make it only better.

This is also where you can add your flavored liquid juice to enhance the taste.

3) Cool Down Time

Once this stage is done, turn the heat on the stove off and let it cool for about 5-10 minutes.

4) Pour Into Container

Take the thin coffee filter and place it over the bowl or glass you wish to pour the pots liquid in.

The coffee filter acts as just that, a filter to help all the non-liquids be filtered out so your clearomizer is only filled with liquid.

5) Put in eCig Tank

After you pour the pot in, take the dropper bottle and squeeze some out into it, then pour it into an electronic cigarette clearomizer or tank.marijuana pen

Make sure you don’t drop any liquid into the tank if the liquid is still hot as it can crack the plastic tanks.

6) Mix in some THC & Enjoy!

If you do not have cannabis, that is fine.

It can be done with trimming and stems of the plant.

Anything with THC or trichome will work, however it won’t be as strong as using the buds with higher THC.

A Few Things to Notes:

  • You will only get better as you do it more. You will then level out the ratios correctly and know how hot and long to leave the pot on the stove as everyone’s experiments will yield different results.
  • Please remember to always start off slow.
  • Always be safe and never ever leave it in reach of children – with great power, comes great responsibility!

Please feel free to correct me if I’m mistaken but didn’t Colorado recently outlaw making this product at home ? I’m not agreeing nor disagreeing. I’m simply curious. Thanks.

The at home making concentrate law is for hazardous solvents (butane, compressed gas, etc), correct me if I’m wrong but I dont think VG or PG fit this category as its more related to a water hash extraction. ISO extraction could be a grey area I believe since it is flammable. As usual with all laws it seems, they cannot be clear and always leave grey area to be interpreted by a judge

VG is okay to use by itself, but you’ll get a lot of separation between the VG and the stuff you extracted AND VG has a lower saturation point (ie. VG can’t absorb as much cannabis as PG or PEG400 can) If you use a mixture of PG/VG (70/30 mix), more cannabis will be infused making it stronger.

  • Eric

No they haven’t passed any law as of yet, trying to but don’t think it will pass cause we medical patients need the concentrates. Controlling who makes it anymore is virtually impossible.

PG is the same thing used in making anti-freeze. Very unhealthy to inhale

    • BN

It’s also in some processed foods- ice cream, baked goods, salad dressing, etc. So better go all natural then.

Water is also used in making antifreeze.
Just because something is a component in a mixture that’s toxic, does not mean that the substance itself is.
I’m sure you eat PG almost every day

    • jake
      April 19, 2015

Propylene Glycol aka PG is used as a component in anti-freeze due to it’s depressed freezing point when mixed with water. Many get this confused with Ethylene Glycol which is also used in anti-freeze and can be toxic to humans and many animals. PG is used in fog machines, food products and by the medical-pharmaceutical industry with such tings as inhaled asthma medications and breathing treatments for many years. Propylene Glycol is used as a humectant so one should be sure and drink plenty of liquids to keep from getting dehydrated.

I’ve been vaping ejuice for 5 years and have extensively researched PG, VG Liquid NIc etc and I can assure you PG has been proven to be of the safest ingredients in e-juice. Flavorings on the other hand are the most unknown where ejuice is concerned.

I make my own herb vegetable glycerine (VG) at home. I don’t use any PG since it’s very difficult to find in Canada, & it’s possible to get organic USP (food grade) VG here.

The process described is very good for making the glycerine. After mine “cooks” on very low heat for about 6 hours, I usually leave it covered on the stove overnight, then reheat in the morning to strain and collect. Be careful not to turn the heat too high, or cook it too long, both of which have made a couple of my past yields taste unpleasantly chlorophyllish (nasty when heated).

For those of you who haven’t used it before, VG is incredibly sticky, so filtering it to get the most extract can be a pain. To get the most yield, strain your finished concentrate through a fine mesh straining bag (I would definitely Not use a coffee filter) or layered cheesecloth. Ensure you put on some rubber/latex/nitrile/silicone gloves, and squeeze the concentrate into a sterile jar. The syrup should be at least warm; it’s easier if it’s verging on too hot for your hands (I use padded silicone gloves so that I can handle it hot).

I often add a bit of non-nicotine ejuice, or a few drops of Lorann’s Oils flavour extract to my VG ejuice. For best results, do this in very small batches (I actually suggest only one atomizer-full to test the flavour palatability and strength before you flavour an entire batch. The most I ever flavour at once is 15 mls, and this is easily done in the dropper bottles you’ll store your herb eliquid in for use.

Straight VG eliquid is much more densse and sticky than PG eliquid. I’ve found it works best in an RDA-type clearomizer, with extra cotton wicking (I use organic cotton balls from my local pharmacy). The more typical RBA tanks usually produce a burnt flavour that I don’t like, and you’ll have to ensure you use a fairly low-voltage battery to prevent this from happening.

Using an e-cig with your own easily-made, extremely affordable herb ejuice is a great way to go. There’s nothing like walking down the street, openly taking a dose of medicine when needed, and leaving behind nothing but a whiff of the scent of buttered popcorn. What a life!

Good luck to all of you and have fun exploring with your own methods!
      Namaste

This is the most correct post for making cannibas ejuice liquid, btw some flavorings also have an odor ie peppermint, which aid in masking the smell a very faint sweet smell.

    • nagchampa
      March 1, 2015

By the way S ED, using VG, none will cook off b/c it’s covered when it’s being heated, as the heat should be too low for evaporation. You don’t want to boil it, it should be heated at no higher than 200F. Your herb should be decarbed before it’s added to the VG (200F for ~ 30 – 40 minutes) to ensure max THC/CBD levels. The long, low-temp cooking will accomplish this as well but your end product will taste more chlorophyllish if you use “raw” herb in the VG).

What you’ll lose in the process is the VG that continues to stick to the herb and your strainer due to its stickiness. That’s why straining when it’s warm and more viscous is important for a higher yield. fyi, I strain the herb VG back into the original VG bottle, label it with the date, strain or phenotype, and refrigerate it until I’m ready to fill a 15 oz dropper bottle for on the go. You can keep your used VGed herb in a plastic bag in the freezer; use it as a poultice for burns, scrapes, excema, rashes, etc.

Why not just bypass the glycerin & do a more efficient extract using alcohol?

After you have done the extraction of the cannabinoids, you can then carefully use electric heat to reduce it down to a pure oil. A few drops of water added at the end of the alcohol cooking process helps to get rid of alcohol residue.
Never use an open flame anywhere near alcohol!

A web search will come up with many instructions of how to extract with alcohol then reduce that down to the oil. Alcohol is explosive so care must be used when heating it, outside is preferred but if inside, open doors & use a fan to blow the fumes away. Always use electric burners to heat the alcohol.

    • Dawn

Hi Sheila, I love alcohol extractions too! I am curious about your statement “A few drops of water added at the end of the alcohol making process helps to get rid of alcohol residue” can you please clarify on that? I’ve not heard that before and would love to know. I get my oil down to where there is virtually no alcohol but there is that little bit of residue. Thanks so much!

      • Chas Holman
        September 21, 2015

Hi Dawn.. The mechanics behind a bit of water at the end, is water has a higher boiling point than alcohol.. so when you think you have all the alcohol evaporated off, add a bit of water and by the time that water has evaporated, at least in theory the rest of the alcohol should be long gone. I also go the extra effort to then stick the pyrex (or whatever) an an oven around 140 degrees for 40 minutes or so.. You will see bubbles tiny ones.. This is the remaining CO2’s escaping..

    • Me
      August 14, 2015

You don’t want to use an alcohol based tincture in an e-cig. It would burn your throat, and stand a reasonablly good chance of exploding. Bad idea.

      • Chas Holman
        September 21, 2015

Hi Me.. They are talking alcohol extracts, there should never be any alcohol in it when finished correctly.

Probably is a good time to bring up that alcohol extracts would not work in a standard E-cig vape very well, if at all.. However it works fine for vaping in a standard type rig.

      • Not Me
        September 22, 2015

Everything you just said is completely false, because you didn’t read, or you couldn’t comprehend what was being said in this woman’s comment. Sheila, the reason an alcohol extraction would work badly for the intended purpose is actually because this post is about vaping cannabis undetected, concentrated cannabis oils smell distinct and can be identified. Adding the PG dilutes it, so that when you vape, it looks and smells like a regular vape, not cannabis. Concentrates derived from alcohol extractions can’t explode you idiot. Please, never procreate.

One step that I believe you are all missing is decarboxylation of the cannabis before you even grind it for extraction – that’s why some of you taste “green” or “chlorophyll” in your extractions…. Use Pyrex baking dish, break up your cannabis into small pieces, fill the dish 1″ deep evenly across, wrap tightly with plastic wrap and aluminum foil and place in a 240 degree farenheight oven for 30 mins. 45 mins if you are using it for edibles…. When you remove the cannabis, do NOT unwrap the dish until it has completely cooled at ROOM temp, once cooled (3-4hours) unwrap and voila – decarbed cannabis ready for extraction – why bother extracting the acid forms of your cannabinoids? Unless you are fighting cancer – thca and cbda both aid in reducing cancer cell growth, as well as aiding sleep – however for pain or for buzz, you should certainly decarboxylate your bud. You will notice drastic improvement.

    • Vinnie
      August 22, 2015

Decarbing will not remove chlorophyll and you should probably keep your temp closer to 200-220 degrees as some cannabinoids have lower boiling points than that.

      • Harold Bishop
        September 13, 2015

No. In fact, these businesses run on customers buying it because they think it might give some of the benefits of cannabis. The reality is that it does not, but it is legal to sell hemp, so this company can market heavily to the gap created by real cannabis being illegal.

Perhaps you buy one and realize it’s junk. Maybe you buy one more just to make sure you used it right. It doesn’t matter, at $40 a bottle, the companies selling hemp oil are laughing. And there’s nothing you can do about it because they told you it wouldn’t get you high. It doesn’t do anything.

Only a guess, but I don’t think the flatiron will get hot enough to decarboxylate the THC and i’m sure the duration of it isn’t enough to decarboxylate the THC. That would mean that the psychoactive effect of it would be extremely reduced.

i tried this. it tastes like butt. I mean I caught a bit of a buzz, but man did it taste bad. I even used a really strong menthol flavor to hide the taste. Menthol resin juice. I ended up throwing the whole bottle away, but if you’re desperate enough, any port in a storm.

Wow…I gotta say, most of these opinions are quite funny. So much disinformation happening in this industry. Just do yourself a favor and grab some chemistry text books, and learn about polarity of liquids.

Actually it works very very well. Just make sure you grind well, the small bullit type coffee grinders are indeed best. As long as the oil you are using is USP grade then your fine. Order it online. Cheapest and you know what the hell your getting. After you grind it to death. Put it on parchment paper and bake it for 25 minutes at 240 (ovens and even the temp will vary.) Those are the most important steps. Long as you get those right then it will mess you up!

OMG! I never knew CANNABIS OIL could cure cancer, i thought it was only meant to eliminate leukaemia and Illinois paralyses, until 2 months ago, When i got a bottle of the oil, I bought them pretty expensive though, but had no option and didn’t want to loose my life just because of money..It turned out to be what i was looking for over 17 months, a week after buying the CANNABIS OIL it was like a reborn for me. Even my doctors were so amazed by its potency. I seriously advise that you also get yours, I am a living testimony of the wonder works of the cannabis oil and avoid going through life risking surgerys. its 100% potent i swear..
I got mine through “Cannabisoiltreatment@hotmail.com” . Godbless you all and i wish you a quck recovery.

      Praise God!
I’m glad to hear this from you.
“The Lord loves justice, and all His ways are ways of righteousness and love.”

I am wondering if vamping the blessed cannabis herb can help with lung disease. I am hopeful that America will soon abandon these evil laws which forbid the use of God’s medicine.

Do pray with me that He will continually help our lawmakers to see that, “everything God has made is good, and it is made Holy by The Word of God and prayer.” (1 Tim 4:4-5)

May your love and joy increase, through the name of Christ our shield. Amen

Love this idea! I’m going to obtain some pg or vg and my favorite E-juice flavor and try this with some high end middies. I have a refillable top fill tank/atomizer and I will be able to make and fill up my vape pen with ease! Gotta get the veg glycerin or polypropylene glycol first though. Already have the herb, LOL

Cant you just put ground up cannabis into the vape pen with ejuice already in it? One of my friends told me if you did that, it would get heated up and dissolve it…..Could this work? I dont want to try it and then it not work.

    • Daniel
      October 13, 2016

the coils in the vape pen wouldn’t heat up the THC hot enough for it to work.

I make my own all the time. I like taking wax and mixing it with Pg or VG and melting a sec in the microwave. Works great. Cape away!

Glycerin itself isn’t a great solvent so I make my e-juice by using pure ethanol as a solvent (Everclear works), then mixing the “Green Dragon” alcohol tincture with PG or VG. Then I distill the alcohol off since it has a lower boiling point than glycerin. You should either use an laboratory still or do it outside on an electric burner (no open flames) because vapor alcohol is highly flammable. But this is the BEST way to get the highest amount of THC into glycerin.

And if you happen to have a nice lab setup complete with a lab-grade homogenizer, you can dissolve straight hash oil into some alcohol, mix it with PG/VG, distill it off, and homogenize the hell out of it. This will keep the THC completely suspended in the liquid indefinitely.

    Happy vaping! 😉

So, I also use the ethanol method but have been trying to mix the cannibis oil with the VG after it is distilled. It does not mix well and always separates. So is it better to mix the VG in with the alcohol/weed mix before distilling? Also, the straight cannibis oil is like mollassis and doesn’t vape well as it is too thick, hence the reason for mixing it with Veg. Glyc.

PG or VG? Propylene glycol is a form of mineral oil which in itself isn’t bad, but vaped at high temperatures it becomes toxic and could cause more lung damage than smoking cigarettes. I don’t see any health benefits there. Using vegetable oil is a no brainer

    • t
      January 8, 2017

Question: you can use vegetable oil to make the vape juice? Or would you use the vegetable glycol?

      • Scott
        February 4, 2017

DON’T USE VEGETABLE OIL! All you will end up doing is ruining your bud! You want to use a 70/30 mixture of PG/VG (propylene glycol/vegetable glycerin), or even 50/50 PG/VG. If you’re just starting out with this, stick to using PG/VG for now until you get pretty good at it, then switch to using PEG400. The pg400 costs a lot more but it’s got a higher saturation rate and it’s a lot easier to infuse the cannabis

I made a great batch of VG Tincture in Magic Butter machine using 2 cups of VG and 1 ounce decarbed weed. I used the stronger tincture time and heat on machine. This stuff is good and strong when added to any food or drink. So I took a 1/2 cup of this VG tincture and added 1/4 of PG and tried in my vaporizer and it taste like shit and takes about 12 to 15 hits to catch a light buzz and I recently got some medical Marijuana ones that kick my ass in 3 pulls and great flavor. What am I doing wrong with my homemade juice? Thank you

This information is misleading. In order to feel the euphoric effect of the cannabis you would need to decarboxolate the weed prior to adding into you (VG PG) vape solution. Or you can Decarboxolate the vape solution as a last step during the stirring process. Cannabis in its raw form has THCa which doesn’t get you high; so what’s the point. However; when heated at 240°F for 40 min. the THCa chemical converts to THC, the chemical we have all come to love. Hope this helps.

    • Mike
      October 18, 2018

      How do you decarboxylate?

    • Ryan Stubblefield
      February 21, 2019

No you don’t the VG is actively pulling out the thc, thc A, CBD without heat simply keep adding a tablespoon per week and infusing the cannabis into the VG. Once a week flip it upside down and then right side up while continuing the tablespoon of VG that will ensure its active and after 2 months to 3 you’ll have a concentration. The temperature of the coils while vaporizing is plenty to activate the thc to make sure you get stoned

  • Leonardo Nieves
    July 8, 2017

You need to decarboxolate your weed first bro.

    • J
      September 9, 2017

Do you decarb weed before you smoke it???? No, when you vape it heats it up. No need to decarb unless you are not heating it to smoke.

      • Pat
        March 18, 2018

No, the vape temperature never reaches the decarb heat of 240F and will not decarb your eliquid.

        • Harald
          April 30, 2018

That is just wrong. The liquid heats pretty much up to PG’s boiling point which is about 356 °F or 188°C. Also you do not even need 240 for decarbing, its just happening less efficient.

I have made some pretty good VG cannabis vape juice. I would like to try adding some extra flavors (ie: raspberry, bubble gum, whatever). What I can’t find is any ideas on how much of what kind of flavor additive to use other then just trial and error. One place said I needed to use a mix of 30% of the flavor additive and 70% cannabis, which would of course knock my cannabis strength down by 30%. Anyone actually done this with good results?

I now use “Tasty Puff” flavors (made to add to vape juice) at about 5-10%…different flavors seem to be more potent than others. So you will loose a little on the cannabis potency, but get cool flavor.
