Iowa Senate Passes Bill to Reduce Penalties for Cannabis Possession

Iowa’s Senate marylandhas voted 36 to 13 to pass Senate File 219, a measure to significantly reduce the penalty for possessing small amounts of cannabis. The proposal now heads to the state’s House of Representatives.

Senate Filed 219 would reduce the penalty for possessing up to 5 grams of cannabis, making it a minor misdemeanor punishable by up to 30 days in jail. Under current Iowa law, possessing up to 5 grams of cannabis is punishable by up to 6 months in jail.

In 2014 a proposal to allow for the medical use of cannabidiol for the treatment of seizure disorders was passed into law, though no method of legally obtaining the medicine was established.
