Initiative Filed to Legalize Recreational Cannabis in Nevada

An initiative to legalize the recreational use, possession and distribution of cannabis has been filed in Nevada by the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana. Advocates will have until November 11th to collectnevada 101,667 valid signatures; if they’re successful, lawmakers will consider the measure during the 2015 session. If lawmakers reject the measure, it would be automatically put to a vote of the people in 2016.

Under the proposed law, the possession of up to an ounce of cannabis would be legal for everyone 21 and older. Cannabis retail outlets would be authorized to distribute the substance.

Under current Nevada law, the possession of any amount of cannabis is a misdemeanor charge with a potential jail sentence of up to a year. For someone’s 4th offense of possession of up to an ounce of cannabis, the charge is a mandatory minimum sentence of 1 to 4 years. This new initiative would make the possession of up to an ounce entirely legal for those 21 and older.

I’ve actually read the proposed petition & I am NOT happy with a number of things in it! True legalization does NOT make you a criminal for having X amount on you. I can buy 30 pounds of tomato if I want why should I be limited on cannabis? I can grow tomato’s so why shouldn’t I be allowed to grow? Having been a part of the team of people who got the current medical law changed & seeing how legislature can totally tear apart & redo something, it is IMPERATIVE this one be done right!! Do NOT accept less then perfect legislation as it took 12 years to get the medical improved but still far from perfect. Now it’s all about the money. This petition is STILL all about the money, they want to restrict the sellers to the current dispensaries when they are in place. The tax & regulate needs to go by the wayside !! A regular sales tax is fine but no “excise tax”!!

    Well there it is!

    Sec. 14. Penalties.

    2. A person who smokes or otherwise consumes marijuana in a public place, in a retail marijuana store, or in a moving vehicle is guilty of…

I would like to object to this mentality. What could you use as an excuse to stop me from trying the product in the dispensary? For that matter why is it that it’s use has to be hidden! Do you restrict other smokers to hide when they smoke? I have had to hide all my life. I am tired of it and will smoke wherever I need too. Do you think my smoking in front of kids is going to influence them, at sixty plus years old? I still don’t understand your fear of someone liking Cannabis. What if I have a Cabainol deficiency?
